England can be found in Great Britain which is on the west of Europe. The citizens of England are called the English. England is the central and biggest of four of the countries of the United Kingdom. It can be found on Great Britain which is on the west of Europe. The citizens of England are called the English. The name England came from of the Anglos, who had joined the Saxons in invading Great Britain and had named it Angle land. This of course, eventually became England.  
The name England is being widely used in today’s media and is sometimes used in an official manner but with the meaning of the United Kingdom or Great Britain.  
Although the concept of England lives on politically, economically and in legend, but unlike as it is with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland there is no political establishment or government by the same name.

History
The first official inhabitants of England are the Celts. When the Romans were invading Western Europe, they also took England and named it “Britannia” in the 1st century AD. Even though the Romans ruled over England for four centuries, the country wasn’t too affected by it. From the 5th century onwards, the Anglo-Saxons, comprised of the Anglo and Saxon peoples, forced the Celts north, to Scotland and west, to Wales.   After these migrations, England was formed in the cultures of the Anglo-Saxons.  

The Anglo-Saxons formed kingdoms against each other in the 6th and 7th centuries. In the 8th century and with the influence of The Roman Empire and Ireland they had accepted Christianity. The Scandinavian invasions, starting in the year 795 were repeated many times until the 11th century. Danish Great Knud, had conquered the whole of Great Britain. Edward (1042-1066), of the Anglo-Saxon royalty, liberated England.  

After his death, his predecessor Harold, was not recognized as the king by the Duke of Normandy William I (aka William the Conqueror), and after claiming the title, warred with the country for 5 years and finally took the throne. The kings of Normandy and the monarchs of Anjou especially, had vast and rich lands in France. The English Kingdom, for a while, spanned from the Somme Valley to the Pyrenees. An important result of the Norman invasion was the synthesis of the Anglo-Saxon culture and that of the Normans, who had come from France. The English language was greatly influenced by this cultural mix. Relations with Europe led the English and French kingdoms to long wars. The biggest of these is of course the Hundred Years' War.  

Henry III supported the development of the three principalities of Wales and in the year 1170, the “Pale” colonies were established. Edward I, conquered Wales.  
He tried to have his strength reach all the way to Scotland. King John, with the Magna Carta being signed after the revolts of the nobles, had his authority over these people officially approved of and this document is now known to be the first written pact dealing with human rights.  

Further on, in the 14th and 15th centuries, there were a few complications regarding social, religious and political affairs. The “Black Plague” that wreaked havoc on Great Britain had killed off a great portion of England’s population and caused the reform of the countries social and economical makeup.  

In the period between 1455 and 1487, England was affected by the “War of the Roses”, in which the Lancaster and the York dynasties had partaken. The war ended with the defeat of the Lancaster dynasty and the Tudor dynasty took the throne of the English Kingdom.  

During the Tudor dynasties reign, the English Kingdom gained strength and surpassed Scotland. Henry VII and Henry VIII (1458-1541) used the parliament to maintain the order and unity of their country, and to impose the strength of the Kingdom onto the people in the process. Henry VII, reformed the Church and established the English Navy.  

Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I, had Anglicanism accepted as England’s official religion and destroyed the Catholic resistance. By demolishing the, then claimed, invincible Spanish armada, she laid the foundations for the British Empire. She claimed Irelands land and added it to England.  

During her reign there were big developments in literature and the arts. Elizabeth I, in her long and successful reign, even managed to influence Scotland greatly with the English culture. The marriages between the Tudor and Stuart dynasties brought the two, being traditionally enemies, together. In the 17th century, with the English Kingdom getting stronger, they spanned out and founded the Jamestown colony in England in the year 1607.  Many English wanted to form new lives for themselves and settled in North America as “Official Servants”. In 1603, the Scottish King James VI took the throne of the English Kingdom and initiated the Stuart Dynasties reign there. From 1603 to 1607, he was the king of both Scotland and England, meaning he was the ruler of two countries, by International Law.  

During Charles I’s (son of James I) reign, a war between the supporters of the Parliament and supporters of the Kingdom broke out, due to the expenditures of the Kingdom being paid for by the people. This war, The English civil lasted 9 years, between 1642 and 1651.  

After many successive battles, the Parliament came to power. Initially a country was established under parliamentary rule (1649-1653) and then ex-king Charles I was executed and England became a republic state. Afterwards, a short lived republic, known as the "Commonwealth” was established (1653-1659) under Oliver Cromwell’s rule. After Cromwell’s death, to avoid any interior issues, the exiled King Charles II was invited to England to form the Kingdom once again. The period between 1658 and 1685 is now known as the “Restoration Period”.  
James II, brother of Charles II and pretender to the throne was overthrown by Mary II, his daughter, and her husband William III, the ruler of the Dutch Republic, for having close relations with the Catholics in a revolution called the “Glorious Revolution”.  

After the reign of William III, in 1702 his daughter, Anne took the throne as Queen of both England and Scotland. She also had the title of Queen of Ireland and in 1707, under the Act of Union, united both countries under a single kingdom.
Anne had been the queen of both England and Scotland until the day she united the two countries under the name of Great Britain. Legally she was the “Queen of Ireland” and in the 1800 Act of Union, Ireland became a part of Great Britain, giving it its final form, but many historians claim that Great Britain officially came to place in 1707.
